FEATHER CONTEST RAYNER BEATS AITKEN By Televranh—Press Association WELLINGTON, July 20. Clever work when fighting at close quarters, rugged fighting tn the open and evasion of many of his opponent’s onslaughts by heavy defensive work earned for Charrie Rayner (Blenheim) a points decision over Billy Aitken (Wellington) in a 15 round professional feather-weight match in the Town Hall, to-night. The decision was well received by a packed house, which was treated to an interesting and exciting contest. Rayner’s weight was announced as 9st 61b, and Aitken’s as Bst 121 b. Aitken was the aggressor frojn the outset, and it seemed that he was looking for a win by the short course, but he met a stubborn fighter who put up a strong resistance in the early rounds to fight strongly over the last part of the distance. WINS FOR MUDGWAY AND PAINTER By Telegraph Pies> Associatior AUCKLAND, July 20. Two professional boxing contests were held to-night. The chief match was between Neville Mudgway (Waihi) and “Young” Delaney (Australia). Mudgway won in the last round on a technical knock-out. the referee stopping the contest after Delaney had been down for several counts. Delaney weighed 9st 61b compared with Mudgway’s lost 21b. The second bout was between Lance Painter (Auckland), former light-heavy-weight amateur champion of Auckland and New Zealand, and Syd Wells (Whakatanel. Painter was 12st 131 b, and Wells 15st 71b. Although Painter was making his professional debut, he was too fast and scientfic for his opponent. The referee stopped the match in the fifth round. RAY NICOL OUTPOINTED By Telegraph Fibs? Association INVERCARGILL, July 20. In a heavy-weight professional boxing contest of 15 rounds this evening, Claude Nichol (12.10) Australia, outpointed Ray Nicol (12.7). It was not a spectacular fight for there was too much in-fighting, but a moderate attendance saw some hard punching. The Union Company has received advice that the Kalingo once more has the hulk Rosamond In tow and expects to reach Auckland to-morrow. About 10 o’clock this morning the Kalingo came alongside the Rosamond ’n Hicks Bay. Later in the day the towline was again connected and the Kalingo left Hicks Bay at 5 pm. for Auckland.
