GOOD OUTING

SOUTH CANTERBURY HUNT MEET AT LEVELS Only a small but straight going field turned up for Wednesday's meet of the South Canterbury Hunt at Levels Store and they were rewarded with one of the best days of the season. Scent was good all day and hounds ran at a screaming pace, the followers having to gallop hard to keep with the pack. A hare was almost immediately found on Mr Esley’s and she made due north through Mr Scott's and across a by-road into Mr Keltnan’s. Here she turned back and made for her own country. After a fast two and a-half miles, hounds pulled her down close to where she was found. Hounds had broken her up when another hare was viewed stealing away. Hounds were laid on and the field were given a rare gallop across Messrs Kelman's and Brosnahan’s and back through Mr Kelman’s to the Main Road, down this for a quarter of a mile and righthanded through Mr Kyle's to the field she was found in. Unfortunately several fresh hares crossed the line and when the pack were whipped off the hare had made good her escape. The afternoon was if anything better than the morning and the first run was between flve and six miles. Found in Mr Kelman’s, the hare made away over the Levels-Arowhenua road and across the bottom of Mr Bums’ farm and into Fitzgerald Bros. Racing across several paddocks, she turned back into Mr Burns’ and without a check across this farm into Mr Kelman’s. A field of turnips checked the pack, but they soon hit off the line and after passing Mr Brosnahan’s house they ran to Falvey’s crossroads, where for some inexplicable reason they ran clean out of scent. The final run was a fast couple of miles through Messrs Brosnahan’s and Burns’ and back to Mr Brosnahan’s, where eventually hounds had to admit defeat. Those out were; The Master (Mr C. L. Orbell) on Tycho, Huntsman J. Shaw on Peter and Geordie, Hon. Whip (H. Elworthy) on Ahitu, Misses L. Cartwright on Felicity, B. Harper on Dinah, J. Jones on Kohinoor, A. Orbell on Kingfisher, J. Orbell on Gambler, M. Orbell on Fortnum, C. Broadhurst on Blue Ray, Messrs J. Elworthy on Glen Royal, M. Bailey on Tiger, C. Maze on Glencoe, F. Stewart on Raewin, J. McKergow on Camouflage, E. Kerr on Gay Mac, J. Shaw on Night Parade and R. Register on Paladian.
