TEMUKA (12) V. OLD BOYS (3)
As was expected the game at Temuka was rather a ragged exhibition, the only really good play of the day coming from individual efforts. Neither team was at full strength and that mainly accounted for the mediocre display, but a slippery ball also marred any efforts at concerted play among the backs. To the Temuka forwards must go the credit for their side’s win. Their scrummage work was well up to standard, and their play in the loose, led by L. Iles and D. Huria, a recent convert from League football was a feature of the match. Throughout the game the Old Boys backs exhibited superior initiative, their play being open and at times spectacular. The only try their side secured came seven minutes after the start of the match as a result of one of the brightest movements of the day. From a scrum near the half-way line Marshall set his backs in motion, the ball travelling to Lee, to Cameron, who sold a beautiful dummy to race round near the posts after a run of 40 yards. Marshall missed with the kick from a relatively easy position. Temuka’s points came from a try by H. Mallett, who followed up fast after T. Leonard had punted ahead. Goodson converted. In the second half Goodson “potted” a goal, and a penalty kick was turned to good account by W. McCully. In the closing stages of the game the Old Boys forwards petered out, and Temuka were definitely on top, the visiting backs rarely seeing the ball.
