MANY NEW HANDS

EFFECT OF SHORTER WEEK By Telegraph— preos Associartop AUCKLAND, July 18. Arrangements which, it is expected, will be approved, were made by the Auckland Transport Board in regard to changes in staff necessitated by the shorter week. In all, 145 new hands will be required to take the place of conductors who are to become motormen and to fill other vacancies. The total of the annual increased wages bill will be in the vicinity Of £40,000. The introduction of the shorter week may mean the striking of a levy over the board’s area, as the only other alternative is to raise fares. The provision under the Act for the striking of a levy has not hitherto been enforced.
