WINCHESTER

WELCOME TO NEW VICAR The parishioners of St. John’s Church met their new vicar Rev. L. A. Barnes and Mrs Barnes, at a social in the Sunday School over which Mr L. H. Orbell, warden, presided. After Mr Orbell had introduced the guests of the evening, he extended a welcome from the people of the parish. They had been many weeks without a vicar, and the parish had been extremely fortunate in getting Mr Barnes to fill the vacancy. Mr Orbell said that their guests came from the North Island and were at a disadvantage in coming to a parish of which they knew little. He hoped that the new vicar would be with them for many years. As the parish was a large one, he hoped that in the near future the vicar would have the assistance of a curate. Mr J. L. Stone-Wigg endorsed the chairman’s remarks, and said he hoped that the parishioners would try to make them feel at home. He could assure their guests that they would find the people in the South Island very loyal and would always be willing to help at any time. In the absence of Mrs J. Philp, secretary of the St. John’s Ladies’ Guild, Mrs J. Deßenzy extended a welcome to the guests on behalf of the Guild and the choir. Mi* Barnes thanked the speakers for their welcome and kindly remarks. He had been impressed with the church and Sunday School choir. He would be glad to have the assistance of a curate, but owing to the shortage of curates it was impossible to get one at the present time. During the evening, community singing was held. A competition was won by Mrs A. J. Stone-Wigg. SCHOOL GAMES The gt. Joseph’s Convent School football and basketball teams journeyed to Winchester and played enjoyable games with the Winchester School. The football ended in a draw with 11 points each. Mr H. Oldham was reeree. The Winchester girls won the basketball by 13 goals to 5. Miss D. G. Wilks was referee.
