DISPUTE ENDS
RESIGNATION OF ROUEN ARCHBISHOP dulled Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright ROUEN, July 7. The dispute between the Archbishop of Rouen and the Pope ended with the Popes acceptance of the resignation of the Archbishop, who has been appointed titular Archbishop of Mitylene. A cablegram received on May 17 said: A sensation has been caused in Catholic circles throughout France, owing to the pope removing the 70-year-old Monsignor Villerable, Primate of Normandy, from the Archbishopric of Rouen. This decision came as a climax to a long controversy, in which Monsignor Villerable took action for the misappropriation of funds against nis Vicar-General, Monsignor Bertin, in the civil instead of the Ecclesiastical Court, thereby infringing Canon Law. The Diocesan courts had already convicted Monsignor Bertin, but the Vatican quashed the conviction. Then the Ministry of the Interior intervened and reopened the case. Monsignor Villerable three times refused to resign, as by doing so, he would admit a fault of which he claims he is not guilty. The Pope appointed Archbishop Cambria to administer the Archdiocese but Monsignor Villerable refused to leave the palace, which he held on Government lease.
