AUSTRIA FAVOURS MONARCHY
INSPIRED NEWSPAPER REFERENCE REGARDED AS “INTERNAL QUESTION” United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received June 16, 6.30 p.m.) VIENNA, June 16. The Austrian Government organ, “The Reichspost,” significantly refers to the possible restoration of the monarchy. “Should the Austrian Government believe the preponderating majority of Austrian people desire to express constitutionally its wish for the restoration of the monarchy," says the official journal. “Then the Government would regard it as a purely Internal question, concerning Austria alone.” The greatest importance is attached to this declaration, and early action is predicted. HIGHLY IMPORTANT MOVE POPULAR PLEBISCITE SUGGESTED United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received June 17, 12.19 a.m.) VIENNA, June 16. An article in “The Reichspost,” which is regarded in political circles as the most important Government Intimation since the war, emphasises that the restoration of the Hapsburgs will in no circumstances be carried out by a coup d’etat, which is opposed to the Archduke Otto’s desire for constitutional methods. Accordingly rumours that restoration is near are unfounded. It is suggested that a plebiscite will be the method adopted. “The Rlechspost” adds: “Archduke Otto would not claim the throne of any country outside Austria." Warning to Outsiders Referring to military discussions among neighbouring and other countries, “The Reichspost” adds: “Every attempt at interference from outside will be sharply refused, as no international obligation exists to prevent Austria choosing her own form of constitution or recalling Archduke Otto.” Legitimist circles claim that Signor Mussolini is behind the move to restore the Hapsburgs, which II Duce and Dr. Kurt Schuschnigg recently discussed. Signor Mussolini aims at mediation between the Austrian Government and the moderate Nazis, with a view to removing the German threat on the Brenner Pass, leaving Italy a freer hand in negotiations with Britain and France. ATTITUDE OF LITTLE ENTENTE STRONG OPPOSITION TO RESOLUTION United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received June 17, 12.18 a.m.) LONDON, June 16. The suggested restoration of the Hapsburgs will be s most strongly opposed by the Little Entente, especially Yugo-Slavia, as the Hapsburgs never renounced their claims to that territory in the pre-war and Austro-Hun-garian Empire. It is recalled that the recent conference between King Carol, Prince Paul and M. Benes resulted in .a report that the three issues causing concern and possibly leading to military action were: The Hapsburg restoration, Italian or German interference in Austria, and revision of the frontiers. It is significant that the military chiefs of the Little Entente discussed measures for concerted action In Central Europe and the Balkans.
