A Dunedin resident has recently received from America some new and highly interesting stamps issued in connection with the State-wide Texas Centennial celebration held this year. Printed in purple ink, the Texas Centennial stamp has the portrait of Sam Houston in one corner and Stephen F. Austin in the other, and over a large white star are the dates 18361936. Attached to the same envelope are three other stamps, the Connecticut Tercentenary, 1635-1935, one in observance of the quarter-centenary of the California-Pacific International Exposition at San Diego (1535-1935), and the Michigan Centenary 18351935. This block of stamps has been issued as a compliment to the Third International Philatelic Exhibition of 1936. Another interesting envelope received is one that bears four Rhode Island Tercentenary stamps printed in a slightly lighter shade of purple ink and having a portrait of Roger Williams, the founder of Rhode Island, on them. Across the top are the dates, 1636-1936. It is stated in a cablegram that there is less difference than ever before between the Republican and Democratic parties in the United States. The Democrats alone can trace their existence back to the foundations of the American Republic. Primarily the Democratic Party stood for the rights of each individual State, with a suspicion against Federal control; it has also supported a bimetallic coinage with a fixed ratio for gold and silver. To safeguard the consumer it has favoured in international trade a low tariff, for revenue only. It has favoured noninterference in international affairs, although this, to a certain extent, was modified by loyalty to President Wilson and the League of Nations. The party draws its main strength from the farming community.
