ST. ANDREWS
SCHOOL COMMITTEE The monthly meeting of the St. Andrews School Committee was held in the school. Present: Messrs J. R. Trimble (chairman), R. Russell, E. D. Hoskins, H. L. Wimsett (headmaster). The headmaster reported that the roll now stood at 87 and the average attendance was 81.4. The Education Board advised in regard to the committee’s application for central heating and electric lighting of the school that the matter had been referred to the foreman who will insuect the school and give his report. EUCHRE TOURNAMENT At the fortnightly euchre evening organised by the Esk Valley School Committee in aid of the prize funds, a special challenge match with the Bluecliffs committee and district was played. The visitors won by 232 points to 210. The prizes were awarded to Miss Ruby Beattie (Bluecliffs); Miss Marjorie Gray (Esk Valley); Mr W. J. Beattie, senr. (Bluecliffs); Mr G. Sauer (Esk Valley). Mr J. Stowell, chairman of the Esk Valley School Committee thanked all those present for attending and making the function a success. He hoped the occasion wouldf be an annual one. Mr J. Cocks, replying on behalf of the Bluecliffs Committee and district returned thanks, stating that the evening had been most enjoyable. Supper was handed round after which dancing was enjoyed. Music was supplied by Miss Marjorie Donehue, Messrs A. O’Neill, G. Morris, W. Thomas. Mr W. Thomas acted as M.C. A lucky spot dance was won by Miss Taylor and Mr W. Thomas. A musical parcel competition was won by Miss Taylor. BILLIARDS Considerable interest has been shown in billiards matches played between Pareora and St. Andrews teams. Th? first match was played at St. Andrews when Pareora defeated the local team by two points. Playing a return match at Pareora the St. Andrews team were again defeated by 50 points. Mr D.. Campbell was the winner of a local tournament held recently at Pareora. TENNIS CLUB A euchre party under the auspices of the Tennis Club attracted an attendance of about 40 players. The prizes were won by Miss Josephine Shea and M)r J. Lysaght. Winners of competitions held during the evening were Miss S. Coles, Miss Dorrie O’Loughlin and Miss Morris (Waimate).
