S.M., on a charge of taking trout by other means than rod or line. Mr L. M. Inglis appeared for defendant. and entered a plea of guilty. Mr W. D. Campbell, who conducted the prosecution for the South Canterbury Acclimatisation Society, said that defendant was employed on a threshing machine. On Sunday, May 10. the plant was near Cannington and defendant visited the Pareora river and shot 10 trout with a .303 rifle. He was unlucky to be caught on that Sunday, but judging by his shooting ability he must have been lucky on other occasions. Mr Inglis explained that defendant was one of a party who used the one rifle and all the trout were not shot by him. He told the ranger what had happened and took all the responsibility himself. He considered that it was a case for the minimum penalty. The Magistrate; Perhaps the other members of the party will help to pay his fine. “There is not much chance of that," replied Mr Inglish. “They have disbanded." A penalty of £3 with costs £l/11/-, was imposed.
