SILVER JUBILEE

VERY REV. DR. C. CASEY, S.M. The silver jubilee of the ordination of the Very Rev. Dr. C. Casey, S.M., was celebrated by a Solemn High Mass at St. Joseph’s Church, Temuka, yesterday. Dr. Casey, who is Superior of the Marist Fathers Second Novitiate at Temuka, was celebrant of the Mass. Dr. Geaney, S.M., St. Mary’s Christchurch, his lifelong friend, was Deacon, and Rev. Father Mark Devoy, S.M., one of the senior priests trained by Dr. Casey, Sub-Deacon. Father Riordan, S.M., Maori Missions, Hawke’s Bay, was Master of Ceremonies. The Gregorian Chant was sung by a choir of priests under Father Outtrim, S.M., and Very Rev. Father J. Spillane, SM., Superior of the Marist Missions. The clergy present included the Very Rev. Father Hurley, S.M., Provincial, Wellington, the Rev. Fathers Smyth, Bartley, Seymour, Kerley (Timaru), Herbert and Ginisty (Waimate), Stewart (Hastings), Vibaud, Devoy and Hendren (St. Mary’s, Christchurch), Burger, S.M., M.A., Rector of St. Bede’s College, Christchurch, and the Rev. Father Fogarty, Geraldine. The church was crowded. The Fathers in residence at Temuka entertained the visiting clergy at dinner, when on behalf of his confreres and past students of the province of New Zealand and Australia, Dr. Casey was presented with a typewriter and a substantial cheque. The Sisters of St. Joseph made the handsome jubilee cake. Dr. Casey was educated at the Marist Brothers School, Wellington, and St. Patrick’s College. He began his studies for the priesthood at Meeanee, Hawke’s Bay, and finally proceeded to Rome where he graduated D.D. at the Gregorian University. He was ordained by the Latin patriarch of Constantinople, being assisted at his first Mass by the Very Rev. Dr. Geaney. On his return to New Zealand he was appointed a professor at the seminary. Greenmeadows, occupying the Chairs of Philosophy and Sacred Scripture. He has been associated with this institution for 22 years during which time he shared in the training of 91 priests who are now working in many parts of New Zealand, Australia, and the South Sea Islands.
