SWIMMING

NORTH END CLUB’S CARNIVAL sue CESSFU L FIXT URE Bright warm sunshine, good entries and efficient control were the contributing factors which made the first inter-club carnival promoted by the North End Swimming Club on Saturday afternoon an outstanding success. Sterling support was lent by other town clubs, as well as by Temuka and Geraldine, with a result that large fields faced the starter, and throughout the well-arranged programme keen finishes were the order of the day. Added interest was lent to the men’s events by the presence of several competitors from H.M.S. Dunedin. There was a satisfactory attendance. The standard of swimming was high, and of special interest were the 50 yards South Canterbury championship and the second and final stage of the South Canterbury diving championship. R. Sutherland got home from H. Pateman by a touch in the first heat of the 50 yards, and the second heat was won comfortably by T. W. O. Fox from D. Reid. The final provided a great race, Reid beating Pateman by a touch in 27 4-ssec. Pateman led at the turn but fouled the lane rope nearing the finish. The first stage of the diving championship was decided at Waimate earlier in the season, and three competitors, K. Moffatt, V. McKeague and P. Bridges, contested the last stage on Saturday. In the main the standard was high, Moffatt being judged the winner of the series, with McKeague second and Bridges third. Mr S. Hollander extended a warm welcome to the contingent from H.M.S. Dunedin, who competed in the 66 2-3 yards handicap and the dive, the public for attending and other clubs for their co-operation. He then presented the championship trophies won during the afternon. The following officials controlled the carnival very capably:—Referee, Mr S. Hollander; judges, Messrs S. H. Sullivan, G. H. Andrews, W. Harte; divingjudges, Messrs W. Carlton, E. Ramsay, A. C. Rippin, S. Hollander; starter, Mr W. Carlton; check starters, Messrs Rippin and A. Ball; time-keepers, Messrs W. Sutherland and E. Ramsay; timekeeper steward, Mr F. E. S. Long; call stewards, Mrs Morrison, Messrs J. Davey and F. R. Price; rope stewards, Messrs J. Lewis and D. N. Davey; local officer, Mr J. Hayhurst; handicapper, Mr S. G.
