POWER BOARD
COMMITTEE REPORTS PRESENTED MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the South Canterbury Power Board was held yesterday. Present—Messrs G. Dash (chairman), S. I. Fitch, C. E. Kerr, A. W. Buzan, C. J. Talbot, J. R. Hart, F. J. Cook. A. N. Oakey, T. H. Langford, G. Saunders and Dr. P. R. Woodhouse. Finance Committee The Finance Committee reported as follows: Election Expenses—A certificate had been received from the Auditor and Controller General allocating the costs payable by the Board to the various local bodies for the Board’s proportion of the election expenses in May last. Waimate and Mackenzie County Councils had applied to the Board, asking them to meet the accounts paid to the respective clerks, £7/7/and £lO/10/- respectively for the extra work in connection with the elections. The committee recommended that the Board adhere to the Auditor and Controller General’s adjudication. Bad Debts—Recommended that bad debts, to the amount of £305/14/2, be written off as unrecoverable. Sale of Debentures—Recommended that an additional £4OOO over and above the £5OOO recently authorised, be disposed of, bearing interest at 3J per cent, for a term of 25 years. The report was adopted.
General Committee The General Committee reported as follows: Clandeboye Co-operative Dairy Company wrote referring to the condition of the Clandeboye power line, and stating that a considerable number of breaks had occurred recently, and that they wanted to know if the Board had any system of regular inspection of power lines in order that the faults might be discovered prior to breakage occurring. The committee approved of the letter as forwarded by the engineer in reply to the above. Timaru Highland Pipe Band and Timaru Municipal Band applied for leave of absence of Messrs Trigance and Byrom to attend the Pipe Band contest at Wanganui and the Brass Band contest at New Plymouth. Recommended that Mr Trigance be granted leave to attend the Band contest, but the committee regretted that as Mr Byrom was a specialfsed man who could not be replaced, and on account of the pressure of work, he could not be spared. Tenders (house service meters)—Recommended that the Alliance Electrical Co. Ltd. tender for Elgee meters at 22/4 each be accepted in conformity with the engineer’s recommendation. Extensions—The committee approved of the action in carrying out the Kerrytown extension to supply Messrs Taylor, Anderson and Baird, the necessary guarantees having been obtained. The report was adopted. The Board offered congratulations to Mr W. Foden, the Board’s accountant, on his approaching marriage, and agreed to make him a presentation. An application from the Y.W.C.A. for financial assistance to carry on the work in Timaru was referred to the Finance Committee, which was asked to review the general aspect of such appeals.
