PROFIT OF £l5
SUCCESS OF NEW YEAR SPORTS CALEDONIAN DIRECTORS MEET A profit of £l5 on the New Year sports was reported to the directors of the South Canterbury Caledonian Society at a meeting last night. Present: Mesrs A. M. Kilgour (president), E. J. Fairbrother, F. H. Triggs, A. Dunn, Hugh Fraser, R. Oliphant, J. Davey, R. W. Munro, M. H. Richards, C. E. Ha'.l, W. H. Hall, R. A. Rodgers, S. R. Burns and N. Burns. The receipts for the sports meeting totalled £403/10/9, including gates and stand £255/11/12 and entry fees £44/13/6. The expenses amounted to £3BB/19/9, the chief items being prizes £196/2/6 and Australian cyclists £67/18/6. “The sports were very successful and we received a substantial measure of support from the public,” said the chairman, who considered that as usual everything had passed off very well. Competition in all classes was good. There was a net profit of £l5 and that figure might yet be increased. The visit of the Australian cyclists had been well worth while, and thanks were due to Messrs R. A. Rodgers and R. Oliphant for the splendid manner in which they had entertained the visitors. Mr W. H. Hall considered that the financial result was very much better than what the Society had been used to. “The profit was an eye-opener,” said Mr S. R. Burns, who attributed the financial success of the meeting to the visit of the Australian wheelmen. With the exception of the year the Guards Band appeared, there had been a loss on the sports and it was gratifying to see a profit. Thanks were due to the chairman, Messrs Rodgers, W. H. Hall and the secretary (Mr H. H. Fraser) who arranged the visit of the band and the cyclists, and he hoped that they would investigate the possibility of another attraction next year. The chairman explained that after paying the accounts there would be a credit balance of £lOB/5/1. He reviewed estimated receipts and expenditure and considered that after meeting all expenses the Society’s year should end with a credit balance of £llO. A comprehensive vote of thanks was accorded the following for assistance at the sports: Messrs A. B. L. Smith, M. Grant, W. Duncan, Mrs Munro, Mrs Beck, the St John Ambulance Association and the Timaru Highland Pipe Band. Thanks were extended also to Messrs Rodgers and Oliphant for entertaining the Australian visitors and to Mr Allan Grant, of Fairile, and Mrs Manaton, of Fairlie, for their co-operation.
