PROFIT SHOWN

POWER BOARD BUSINESS NINE MONTHS’ PERIOD A return of business for the nine months ended December 31 was presented to the monthly meeting of the South Canterbury Power Board yesterday by the secretary (Mr J. H. McAuliffe). The report stated that the estimated profit for the period was £530. The total sales in the trading department for thet nine months ending December 31, 1935, were: 1935 1934

£3386 19 1 £2807 11 1 An increase of £579 8s Od. Sales of Electricity The sales of electricity to private consumers for the nine months ending December, 1935, were:

£26,107 0 1 £26,994 12 10 At the beginning of the year, reductions in electricity charges were made, estimated at £2,000; therefore by only £BB7 12s 9d less, the revenue is well within the estimate. Private Consumers The total units sold to private consumers by meter (not including flat rate water heaters, pumps or heat storage stoves) were:—

2,419,586 2,285,078 Increase of 134,508 units. “The expenses compare very favourably with the estimates —cost of electricity exceeds by £1032. but this is offset by the increased sales. Renewals are less than estimates, but the difference is made up in depreciation. Maintenance exceeds the estimates by £306, this is on account of the complete overhaul of several of the Board’s trucks. Meter reading exceeds estimates by £6B—this is natural on account of the number of new consumers and increased transport. Administration expenses exceed the estimates by £2sl—this is made up by small increases in several items, but the main one is heating and lighting which exceeds estimates by £79. The income shows an increase over estimates. The sales of electricity exceed by £2043, but repairs and miscellaneous receipts are down by £92. The trading department is quite satisfactory—the sales show an increase over estimates by £863, the profit for the period being estimated at £123.” “Profit Shown” In the opinion of the chairman (Mr G. Dash), the nine months’ trading had been satisfactory. The Board had started behind the mark and had given away more in reductions than the previous year’s profit.
