STEPPED INTO SPACE
CIVIL SERVANT’S DEATH By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, February 5. An inquest was held to-day into the death of Robert Witherford. superintendent of the National Provident Fund and Registrar of Friendly Societies, whose body was found at the bottom of a lift well in the Farmers' Institute buildings on the night of January 15, after he had been missing since the previous day. Evidence was given to show that the lift had passed its weekly inspection on January 10 and its half-yearly inspection by the Marine Department on January 13. After long evidence, the Coroner said it appeared to him that the lift door was not sufficiently closed, and that there was no light in the lift car itself. Whiteford must have stepped into space and fallen to the bottom and been killed. He returned a verdict accordingly.
