INCREASES PRIZE MONEY Gulled Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received January 26, 6.30 p.m). SYDNEY, January 25. The Australian Jockey Club committee has announced a further increase in the prize money for the autumn meeting at Randwick, bringing the total additions to that carnival to £3OOO. The lowest value of any flat race will be £650 and for hurdle races £5OO. Silver Streak’s win over a mile at Trentham with 9.11 was a fine effort, and the North Otago sprinter is probably better now than at any previous stage of his successful career. So far as can be remembered offhand, he is the only horse that Mr E. Aubrey has raced, and it is interesting to note what the Aubrey family have done with a few horses. Mr A. Aubrey has owned about two, one of which was Mt. Boa, and the only galloper to carry Mrs Fleming’s colours have been Mt. Boa and Mt. Vai. The biggest money winners among this season’s two-year-olds are Stretto £1075, Gallio £lO3O, Wild Chase £945, Paper Slipper £7OO, and Pelmet £640. Stretto won the Avondale Stakes, Auckland Welcome, and Royal Stakes, and was second to Gallio in the Royal Stakes after losing a lot of ground at the start. Gallio has been put aside till next season, and Stretto will not get a chance to show whether her one defeat was due to bad luck. Paper Slipper may be the leading juvenile, but he is unsound, and his career may be a short one. Sylvia Sydney failed to stay at Washdyke, and when she carved out the first mile in the Papanui Handicap at Addington in 2.12 1-5 it looked certain that she would stop. M. Holmes then slowed up the field, and as none of the other drivers appeared anxious to take the lead from him he nursed the mare for a dash up the straight and got there by a neck from Queen Author. Usually the first mile of twomile events is run much slower than the second, but the reverse was the case on Saturday. Sylvia Sydney paced the first section from a standing start in 2.12 1-5, and was allowed to take 2.14 4-5 for the second. Kinnoull’s defeat by Heritage in the Trentham Stakes came as a shock to his backers. Heritage won decisively, and the time was fast, but it seems apparent that Kinnoull had been affected by a hard race in the Cup for which he was not quite ready. Usually the Washdyke colt comes from the back to win his races, but on Saturday he was out forcing the pace, probably with the idea of testing Heritage’s stamina. The winner registered a fine performance, but unless he has made marked improvement recently it has yet to be demonstrated that he is Kinnoull’s equal over middle distances. Heritage has never had any chance with Cuddle, while the mare has been proved to be inferior to Kinnoull.
