The Geraldine branch of the Labour Party will tender a complimentary social to Mr T. H. Langford at the Town Hall, next Monday at 8 p.m. Commencing at 1 p.m. to-day at Grantchester School, 300 Otlpua Road, A. N. Oakey and Co. will hold a clearing sale of household furniture and effects for Mr J. D. Buchanan, who is leaving for the North Island. Everything is in nice order and full particulars appeared in last Saturday’s Herald. The sale will definitely be held to-day, wet or fine Officers of the Monterey were relieved to learn on arrival at Auckland last week that the five persons who should have travelled by the vessel from Pago Pago but were prevented by being in the ill-fated motor-boat Tlafau, which was caught in the hurricane, had been saved. When the vessel left Pago Pago it was believed that they had been drowned. The officers said Pago Pago showed many evidences of the hurricane two days before the Monterey’s arrival, plantation owners had suffered extensive losses. In the township itself trees were stripped and blown down and verandahs and roofs damaged.—Press Association. An Essex (Iowa) farmer took out a gun, killed a calf and carefully, ever so carefully, explored the calf’s Inside. He had to be careful.
