An objection often raised to win and place betting is that it compels backers to invest more than they wish. It has, however, been abundantly proved that at Riccarton the place machine offers In itself an attractive medium for speculation, enabling backers to obtain much fun and sometimes profit without worrying the win totallsator. It seems that the same results may be experienced at provincial meetings once the public have become educated to the dual system. At Invercargill last week 44 place dividends were paid out, and of these 31 were over £2, 12 were over £5, and four over £B, one reaching double figures. Returns such as these make it evident that a profit can be made in place betting with less risk of loss than by the straightout method.
