The Rev. A. J. H. Dow, of Gisfsome, is on a visit to Timaru.
Mr D. Elder has left to take up ft position in Wellington. Messrs G. Williamson, E. Smith (Dunedin) and J. Brathwaite (Waipukurau) are staying at the Dominion. Mr E. J. Bell, Chief Librarian, Christchurch, is at present on a visit to Timaru.
Guests at the Grosvenor include Messrs K. B. Bain (Christchurch), F. H. Vincent (Auckland), E. Trent and F. M. Fairley (Melbourne).
Mr Justice Ostler is on his way back to New Zealand after nine months in South Africa, accompanied by Mrs Ostler.
Dr. R. H. Makgill, of Henderson, formerly New Zealand Government bacteriologist, returned to Auckland by the Tairoa after an absence from the Dominion since last April.
After 44 years’ service in the Bank of Australasia, Mr A. G. Fookes, who is retiring on superannuation, was farewelled by his colleagues, and presented with a wireless set and wished many happy years of retirement. Major-General B. C. Freyberg, who has been created a Commander of the Bath, in the New Year Honours, the Victoria Cross for one of the most outstanding individual feats of the Great War. He was bom in London in 1890, but was educated at the Wellington College, New Zealand. When war broke out he joined the Royal Naval Division, and served with the Hood Battalion at the Dardanelles. Later he became brigadier with the twentyninth division, and was thus, at the age of 28 years, the youngest brigadiergeneral in the British Army. Since then he has held several important Army posts.
Mr H. Duncan Hall, of the League of Nations Secretariat, is expected in the Dominion shortly. He was recently appointed to a position which has been created in the information section of the Seretariat, and one of his principal duties will be to exercise liaison between the Secretariat and the British Dominions in matters relating to League information. During a visit he is now paying to Australia and New Zealand, he will carry out a special mission which the Secretary-General, M. Avernol, has asked him to, undertake in connection with public opinion and the Press. After visiting New Zealand with his wife and family, Mr Hall will return to Geneva via America.
