New Orient Liner Orcades The Orient Company have decided to give the name Orcades to the new 24,000 ton liner now being laid down at Barrow-in-Furness, England. Orcades is the ancient name for ths islands now known as the Orkney Isles, North of Scotland, where, in Scapa Flow, the German fleet was surrendered and scuttled after the Armistice. New sister to the Orion the Orcades will not be the first to bear that name. At the close of the Great War, owing to the loss of four ships while under Government control, the company -e--ceived from the Government the management of the three German vessels Zeppelin, Koningin Louise and Prinz Ludwig. The latter of 9764 tons, made her maiden voyage to Australia, under her new name, in May, 1921, and continued in the Australian service until April, 1925, when she was sold and replaced by a new 20,000 tonner. The Orcades 11. will be more than twice as large as her earlier namesake. It was not claimed that the Orion was the largest and fastest or the most extravagantly luxurious ship afloat, but everywhere she has left an impression of advancement. Now, the managers of the Orient Line are carefully watching the maiden operations of the Orion to see whether expert :nCe points to arv possible improvements which might be incorporated in the Orcades.
