ELDERLY BOWLERS’ DAY

SUCCESSFUL GATHERING Founded in 1931, Elderly Bowlers’ Day proved a great success, and each season since, the South Canterbury Bowling Centre has set aside a day for bowlers who can lay claim to being “elderly.” On Saturday afternoon on the Park green there was a large gathering of bowlers who are past their prime, but judging by the form displayed by some of them, they have yet a few seasons ahead of them. Six full rinks took part in the function, which was very successful and certainly most enjoyable. On behalf of the South Canterbury Centre, Mr J. B. Robinson extended a welcome to all who were taking part, and expressed a hope that they would be spared to play for some years to come. Mr Robinson also mentioned that since they last assembled, two “elderly” bowlers, Mr Morgan, of the Ashbury Club, and Mr G. Levens, of the Temuka Club, had passed away. Cr. F. B. Hawkey apologised for the unavoidable absence of the Mayor and Mayoress (Mr and Mrs T. W. Satterthwaite) and said that they would make a point of attending next year. Mr Hawkey said that it was pleasing to see so many present, and he hoped that they would have an enjoyable time, and would enjoy continued good health. Mr Toneycliffe, president of the Park Club, Mesdames Toneycliffe, Walker and Howe provided afternoon tea. Results were:— J. Watt, C. Morgan, W. J. Going, I. J. Bradley (s) 18; R. Heron, S. Cunningham, G. T. Dawson, J. B. Robinson (s) 11. G. Chapman, G. Ford, W. Simpson, J. Irvine (s) 21; C. Worsley, H. Scarf, J. Manchester, T. Skinner (s) 16. A. Macaulay, D. McNeill, J. Gilmore, J. S.
