GERALDINE

NEW CATHOLIC CHURCH

TO-MORROW’S,CEREMONV

To-morrow —the Feast of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary—will mark the ceremony of the laying of the foundation stone of the new Roman Catholic Church of the Immaculate Conception at Geraldine. Thus the hopes of the early Catholics of Geraldine and district and their successors that the time would eventually come when a new church would be erected to the glory of God and the propagation of the faith will come to fruition. By dint of self-sacrifice and enthusiastic work throughout the years, that ideal has been achieved. Dr. Brodie, Catholic Bishop of Christchurch, will perform the ceremony at 3 p.m. The church, which will be of a striking Gothic design, with a square battlemented tower, forty feet in height, will cost £8243. It was designed by Mr H. St. A. Murray, architect, of Christchurch. The builder, Mr J. B. McCormick, of Christchurch, who commenced operations during the second week in November, was handicapped by wet weather for more than a fortnight, but since then his men have made splendid progress, and everything is in readiness for tomrorow’s ceremony.

A large number of the clergy from throughout the Diocese are expected, and it is anticipated that many visitors will be present at the ceremony. The principal speakers will be the Bishop of Christchurch, the Very Rev. Dean J. J. O’Donnell (Ashburton), the Rev. Father M. Murphy, S.M. (Timaru), the Rev. Father M. J. Fogarty, the Mayor (Mr B. R. Macdonald) and Mr T. D. Burnett, M.P., member for Temuka. Afternoon tea will be dispensed after the service. SWIMMING CLUB Mr J. D. The president expressed appreciation of the action of the Herbert Smith Trust (Hamilton) in granting the club two silver cups for trophies for the boy and girl gaining the highest number of points during the season. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr F. Cooling for work in connection with seating. Messrs J. Stevenson, F. W. Morgan. W. K. Murray and the. secretary were appointed a committee to arrange for a division between the sheds. Messrs McKay, A. Jones and R. Helem were elected new members.
