Commercial- and shipping news will be found on page 16. A Show Success. At the Gore Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s Show on Wednesday, Mr A. S. Elworthy won the ewe championship with a hogget bred on Holme Station. This was a very meritorious win, as all the leading breeders in Otago and Southland were represented and competition was very keen. Cottage Gardens. fudge of the cottage garden competitions, recently conducted by the Timaru Horticultural Society, Mr J. Page, of Oamaru, has written to the society stating that on the whole he had been very much impressed with the gardens visited. Some of the prize gardens were of a particularly high standard, ~nd he considered that Timaru should be proud of having citizens who took Such an enthusiastic interest in their gardens. "Better Outlook ” At the close of yesterday’s meeting of the Mackenzie County Council, the chairman (Mr C. J. Talbot) after wishing members a merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year, said that there was now a better seasonal growth, better prices and altogether a better outlook. Moreover, there was a new Government in power, and he was sure they would do their best further to improve things. St. John Ambulance An appeal to the public for funds to assist the work of the Association was made to the public of Timaru yesterday by the St. John Ambulance Association, but the response was somewhat disappointing, the total amount collected being £6B/11/7. Members of the Nursing Division and others interested were engaged in selling badges, and despite the fact that there was quite a crowd in town, the collection was the smallest the Association has ever taken up. Decorations for Festive Season At the meeting of the Mackenzie County Council yesterday, Mr P. E. Neilson said that the business people of Fail-lie had decided to go in for fairly elaborate decorations during the Christmas season. A large number of visitors was expected to be in Fairlie, he said, particularly owinfe to the activities of the Women’s Institute Hospitality Circle. As a contribution towards coloured lighting in the Main Street and other decorations, the Council authorised an expenditure up to £5. "Too Many Dogs ” When the routine motion of assessing the dog tax for the coming year came before yesterday’s meeting of the Mackenzie County Council, Mr George Murray claimed that there were too many collie dogs and he moved an amendment to increase the tax to 2/6 a dog for the first three registered and 10/- for each additional animal. Objecting to such an increase, Mr A. F. Campbell said' that such a tax would make collection difficult, and would encourage dishonesty. Mr Murray’s amendment lapsed for want of a seconder. £313,000 From f irst Wool Sale. Approximately' £312,000 will be paid out to the wool growers of Hawke’s Bay as a result of the first sale which was conducted in Napier on Monday last. The total number of bales disposed of at the sale was in the region of 26,000 and the average price a bale about £l2, an advance of approximately £3/10/- a bale on the price obtained at the first sale of the last series in December, 1934. The average price paid a bale over the whole of the DominDn last season was £9/7/-. The fact that the rise in price is fully appreciated oy growers is indicated by the manne- in which the wool is now pouring in'--) the stores at Port Ahuriri for the second sale, in January. In one store alone the number of bales arriving since Monday has average 1000 a day.
