WESLEY PLAYERS
NEW ZEALAND PLAYS PRESENTED Keen appreciation of the efforts of the Wesley Players was shown by an audience which packed Wesley Hall last night when two New Zealand plays were presented. The Players comprise a group who have taken a live interest in drama since a study group was formed some time ago, and their work has always been favourably commented on. Last night’s presentations were full of interest and the Players reached a high standard. The plays were produced by Mr J. Turkington, the costuming and effects being very good. “Lantern Light,” the first play, was by Miss Manie Inglis, of Timaru. It was a pleasing romance and the interest was maintained until the conclusion. The cast, which brought out the best in the play, was as follows: Janet McGruthers (Miss E. Gibb), Bertha, a Scotch maid (Miss M. Cranston), Nan, niece of Janet McGruthers (Miss Elaine Parker), Osbert Lyall (Mr W. Bums), Norah Hamilton (Miss Margaret Nelson), and Dinah Drummond (Miss Joan Holdgate). “Ghosts on Christmas uve,” the second play, from the of Miss Mahe-i B. Latter, of the North Island, was full of interest. Its romantic theme was very pleasing, and again the cast gave of its best. The players were: Lady Georgina Pow’derham, a lady of the Georgian era (Miss Betty HoldgateL Mrs Middleby, a prim matron of the Victorian era (Miss A. Dunne), Jackie Jennington, a Miss* 1935 (Mrs E. J. Thompson), the Hon. Robert Deering (Mr R. W. Henry), and Captain Thomas Despard (Mr E. J. Thompson). During an interval a clever sketch “The ’Ole in the Road” was given by Messrs P. Parker and L. Jackson. Incidental music was provided by courtesir' <H Mr J. A. Lee.
