An attack on a girl taking part in a Californian performing seal act was made in Blackpool at the Tower Circus by a 12-years-old seal weighing more than 4001 b. The girl, Miss Marlice Steiner, is one of the “Two Hollywood Diving Girls.” As they were about to begin their performance, the seal — which is one of the largest in the turn and is named Diamond- -pounced on Miss Steiner. It seized her arm in its mouth and inflicted a severe bite, knocking her down as it did so. Attendants dashed to Miss Steiner’s rescue and pulled the seal away. Making light of the incident, Miss Steiner went into the ring to carry through the performance, but she was unable to do so, and after nearly fainting she had to retire and was taken to a doctor for treatment. Mr Winton, the proprietor of the act, told me: “I have very rarely known a seal make such an attack on a woman, though they sometimes attack men.” Miss Steiner pluckily took part in the evening’s performance with her wounded arm bandaged.
