HOSPITAL AFFAIRS REPORT TO COMMITTEE The Waimate Hospital Committee of Management met on Wednesday night, i present, Messrs J. I. Hayman (chair- 1 man), G. J. Shackleton, J. V. Riach, f and G. Hennessy. Dr. T. W. Wylie was appointed 1 medical superintendent for the ensuing period. The resignation of Mr S. Prue from the position of gardener was accepted with regret, and it was decided to send , him a letter of sympathy in his illness. Owing to the next meeting falling on : New Year's Day it was decided to ! postpone this meeting until the following Wednesday, January 8. The superintendent (Dr. A. G. Pitts) : reported that the hospital had been fairly busy during the month. The fever ward was closed on November 19. Sister Hutton had returned to Timaru on November 12, and Sister Pardie had come to Waimate on : November 5. Nurse Forbes had left to ; take up a position in the Waikato : Hospital. Nurse Bradley had left on ; December 3 and Nurse Mackay would leave on December 15. The statement of receipts and expenditure for the eight months ended November 30 showed the following: General maintenance payments £slOl/14/11 (provisions £782/13/1, surgical £478/10/3, domestic £1251/2/9, establishment £37/0/5, wages £249/12/11, grounds £59/15/6); capital expenditure £BB/1/3 (buildings £69/2/4, equipment £lB/18/11); receipts £IOBO/18/4 (patients’ fees £IOSB/16/11, miscellaneous £22/2/3). The chairman commented that the financial position was satisfactory. The chairman in his statement for the month reported that receipts were£79/7/4 and accounts were presented for payment amounting to £583/6/3. The return of patients showed that at the date of last return 21 males and 16 females were under treatment. During the month 16 males and 23 females were admitted to the institution and 18 males and 15 females were discharged, leaving 19 males and 24 females still in the hospital. A total of 37 males and 39 females were treated during the month. The customary motion authorising the payment of the staff on Christmas Eve was passed. It was decided to alter the visiting hours to acord with the Saturday halfholiday by allowing visiting on Friday afternoons, but not on Thursdays. The steward reported that the Silver Band intended taking up a collection for Christmas cheer for the hospital. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE At the monthly meeting of the Waituna Women’s Institute Mrs Officer presided over a very large gathering of members and friends. In the competitions for the afternoon there was no entry for yeast bread. The nail driving contest was won by Mrs Elder. Other results were: Flower for the day, Mrs Barnard 1, Mrs Officer 2, Mrs Wilson 3; best bloom in garden, Mrs Naish 1, Mrs Kirkpatrick 2. During the afternoon, the Waihao Downs Institute staged a play, and also presented a monologue. A duet was contributed by Mesdames Clark and Lewis, a pianoforte selection by Miss Palmer, and the Institute choir gave two items. , Four new members were enrolled. Bouquets were presented to Mrs Officer, Mrs Baker, and Mrs Elder. A dainty tea was then served, bringing a happy birthday to an end. CRICKET The Waimate A team to play High School at School grounds will be: F. Wilce, W. Miller, C. Hertslet, L. Holden, C. Richardson, F. Morrison, P. Morrison, L. Willetts, A. Carbis, N. Bryant, I. Mills, W. Kennard, J. Studholme. The Waimate B team to play Glenavy at Manchester Park is: A. Guy, C. Dacre, L. Foote, G. Stevens, A. Averis, L. Kilworth, L. Howe, D. O’Connell, E. Chapman, A. Walker, D. Keyes, D. Buckingham. The following town players have been selected to practise, with a view to selection for the team to play South Canterbury: C. Dacre, E. Chapman, A. Guy, I. Schraeder, E. Hicks, S. Fleming, F. Wilce, L. Holden, C. Richardson, R. McDonald, W. O’Sullivan (school). Country players will be selected to-day. HEALTH CAMP CONCERT The concert organised by the Waimate Health Camp Campaign Committee in aid of the Health Camp funds attracted a capacity house in the Olympia Hall on Wednesday evening. The standard of the concert was high both in the calibre of the artists whose services were obtained, and in the variety of entertainment offered. As an outcome the Health Camp funds will benefit to the extent of approximately £4O. Mr H. B. S. Johnstone, chairman of the concert sub-committee, outlined the objects of the concert and paid a tribute to the generosity of all who had assisted in its organisation. At the conclusion of the programme the Mayor, Mr G. Dash, thanked the artists, particularly those from other centres, who had given of their time and services to make the concert such a success. As chairman of the Health Camp Campaign Committee he expressed appreciation of the assistance the committee would receive from the concert. The programme was as follows: Selection, orchestra (conductor, Mrs C. E. Manchester); song, Rev. A. M. Costain; Egyptian ballet, Miss Moira Granger and pupils; male quartette, Messrs Aitken, Shackleton, Collins and Black; violin solo, Mrs Percy Elworthy; vocal duet, Misses Palmer and Buchanan; song, Mr Arthur Wheeler; . male voice choir, conductor, Mr R. F. Algie; cornet solo, Mr H. F. Vincent; operatic ballet, Miss Moira Granger, . solo dancer; conjuring, Mr Griffiths; song, Miss Gaynor Paape; humorous f item, Mr D. Newall; minuet, Miss Larnach’s party; song, Mr Trevor Granger; : sketch, Messrs Collins and Black. The accompanists were Misses Palmer, Hollamby, Nolan, Mesdames A. Wheeler and A. S. Elworthy. Procters, the Premier Opticians .
