AUSTRALIAN TEAM IN AFRICA DEFEAT OF WESTERN PROVINCES United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph— Copyright CAPETOWN, November 2. The weather was fine and warm for the conclusion of the match Australia v. Western Provinces. The wicket had worn patches at both ends, from which the ball popped up disconcertingly. Fingleton's 53 occupied 167 minutes. McCabe batted brightly, while O’Brien and Darling were never comfortable facing Robertson, the slow right-hand off-break bowler. Almost every batsman who attempted liberties with Robertson’s apparently simple deliveries paid the penalty. Robertson is almost certain now to be chosen for the first test. Western Provinces opened their second innings disastrously and the side never recovered. Bond played perfect cricket but the Australian fielding was brilliant and Barnett's wicket-keeping faultless. FleetwoodSmith again had all the Africans guessing and finished with a fine figure. Australia won by an innings and 44 runs. The following are the scores:— WESTERN PROVINCES. First Innings.
