WOMAN’S MENTAL LAPSE
Described as being of the highest character and as a well-known social worker with private means and her own motor-car, Edith Mary Spencer, aged 62, of Putney, was recently charged before the South-Western magistrate with stealing from a store at Tooting, London, a map and bracelet, together worth 9d. The woman agreed that after buying a number of other articles for which she specific;;lly entered the store, she picked up the map and bracelet, and forgot to nry for them. She had ample money, she declared, and she did not want the map, as she had many better ones. She had recently got a new kitten and put her own gold bangle round its neck, but was looking for another. She was worried, too, at the time about, the illness of some friends. Mr Laurence Vine .defending, pleaded that Spencer had a mental lapse. The case was dismissed, but Spencer was ordered to pay £s's - police costs.’.
