NEW INDUSTRIES

HELP FOR DEPRESSED AREAS MOVING APPEAL BY MR BALDWIN British Official Wireless RUGBY, November 30. Speaking at Dundee, the Prime Minister referred to the special areas in which the worse effects of the postwar depressions had been felt, said they must have their share of the newer industries. It was intended that a share of the work in connection with the necessary re-equip-ment of the defence forces would go to these areas, and he appealed to those who had benefited as a result of the Government’s introduction of protection, to do all in tlieir power to see that when the new works were built, they were put in Durham or Lanark, or South Wales, or one of the other special areas. It was not only a question of increasing opportunities for employment, but helping to stabilise it by developing industry in places which past development had often left dependent on a single industry. “I regard the introduction of new industries into some of those areas as being the most Important work to which a British citizen can devote capital and brains for the benefit of his fellow men,” Mr Baldwin declared. The Unionist Party had a most important part in a great movement which is was supporting, and the National Government was determined to proceed in co-operation with those of like mind in the task of bettering the conditions of the people. Progress in the last generation had been great, and the social services were far ahead of those of any country in Europe, but they took that not as a justification for complacency, but as the greatest encouragement to go on and do more.
