WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

ASHWICK FLAT The November meeting of the Ashwick Plat Women’s Institute was held in the school, Miss Whatman presided and welcomed visitors from Fairlie and Opuha Gorge. The president reported on the pleasant evening at the Allandale birthday party. Mrs West (voluntary organiser) gave an interesting talk on the voluntary organiser’s school and also gave some very interesting details in regard to Women’s Institutes for which she was heartily thanked. The golden thread competition, “Flower wedding” was won by Mrs Searle. Competitions for the month resulted.—A tide or articles from a flour bag: Miss Whatman (pillowsham) 1, Mrs Wood (child’s smock) 2. Bloom: Mrs Wood (peony rose) 1, Mrs D. B. Ross (viola) 2. Pikelets: Mrs Gabites 1, Mrs W. Ross 2. A beautiful iced Christmas cake given by Mrs Wood for competition was won by Miss May Smith, Kimbell. After a social half hour and afternoon tea, Mrs West demonstrated “Christmas novelties,” her collection being admired by all. Mrs McKenzie and Mrs Armitage also sent a collection which were shown and explained by Mrs A. P. Bray. The president proposed a very hearty vote of thanks to each of these ladies and also to Mrs Wood for her thoughful and appreciative gift. Mrs Williams was hostess for the afternoon.
