The christening of the son of the Duke and Duchess of Kent took place in the Private Chapel of Buckingham Palace this afternoon. The infant prince was named Edward George Nicholas Paul Patrick. The Archbishop of Canterbury (the Most Rev. Dr. Cosmo Gordon Lang) performed the baptismal rites. The child was sponsored by seven godparents, including the King and Queen. At the end of the ceremony their Majesties and other mmbers of the Royal family, together with the Home Secretary (Sir John Simon) —the only representative of the Government present —signed the Royal rgister of births and marriages. Earlier in the day the names of the infant prince were inscribed in the City of Westminster register, which was signed by the Duke of Kent. Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret Rose were proud spectators at the christening of Prince Edward, who wore the robes in which Queen Victoria was baptised. The chapel was decorated with white roses, marguerites, lilac and heather. Crowds waited outside the Palace.
