EARLY MINING DAYS
A VIVID REMINDER By Telegraph—Press Association DUNEDIN, November 7. A reminder of early Otago mining was given to-day when two men brought into the office of the “Otago Daily Times” a pickle bottle twothirds full of gold and a tobacco tin full of nuggets, the largest of which weighed more than two ounces. The gold was the yield from the wash-up of the Golden Arrow Sluicing Company for 20 days’ work, and was estimated to be worth £IOOO. The claim occupies a site on the Arrow River, from which more than 70 years ago a party of miners, headed by a colourful figure named Fox, took 2321 b of gold in a little more than a month. The company has paid a 50 per cent, dividend on the first year’s working, and expects to pay 100 per cent, this year on its capital of £llOO.
