SOUTH CANTERBURY ASSOCIATION

MEETING OF EXECUTIVE The fortnightly meeting of the management committee of the South Canterbury Cricket Association was held on Tuesday. Present—Messrs A. E. Lawrence (chairman), A. G. Simmers, P. E. Islip, R. C. M. Sunley, P. D. Sinclair, W. G. Gow. L. Johnston, R. E. Seaton, J. Averis, R. B. Murchison and M. J. Angland (hon. secretary). A letter was received from Mr P. D. Mansell (Christchurch) accepting appointment as the Association’s resident delegate to the New Zealand Cricket Council. The Mid-Canterbury Sports Protection Association wrote regarding the formation of an Association in their province and offering support to the proposed local association. It was decided that the letter be referred to the special sub-committee dealing with the formation of a South Canterbury Association. The New Zealand Cricket Council wrote asking for payment as funds were available for a portion of the guarantee. It was decided to accede to the request as soon as possible. The New Zealand Cricket Council wrote forwarding the agenda for the annual conference to be held at Christchurch. The Association directed its delegate (Mr M. J. Angland) to support the South Auckland remit “that an annual match be played between representatives of the four major associations and the representatives of the minor associations.” Mr Lawrence pointed out the difficulty in arranging such a match, and suggested that if the matches were confined to the provincial areas there would be a greater possibility of the matches being arranged. It was decided that the Association’s delegate put forward the suggestion mooted by Mr Lawrence.

*lt was decided to oppose the Southland remit that outside umpires be appointed for Hawke Cup matches if asked for by the challenging association.

Mr Jslip, speaking in support of the attitude adopted by the Association, said it was a reflection on local umpires to appoint outside officials for Hawke Cup matches. The expense of bringing umpires from other centres also had to be taken into consideration. The Committee was also opposed to a further remit from the Southland Association that in the event of rain provision be made for extending the time set down for the game until at least one innings is completed by each side.

The remit from the Nelson Association that all Hawke Cup challenge matches be played to a finish was also opposed. The match committee reported that the South Canterbury Amateur Athletic Association had been granted the use of the Caledonian Grounds for November 9. The committee also reported that arrangements had been entered into with the Borough curator for the use of the Park grounds for the Y.M.C.A. cricket teams. On the recommendation of the match committee it was decided that all clubs be directed to forward to the Association details of all matches played. It was unanimously agreed that a letter of sympathy be forwarded to Mr W. Grant wishing him a speedy recovery from his accident.

Mr A. G. Arnold, of Palmerston North, winner of the £2OOO prize in the Better Prizes Art Union, is now reported to have changed his attitude towards the acceptance of the prize, and it is stated that he intends to use the money to set up business on his own account as a carpenter. It was previously stated that because of religious scruples Mr Arnold had refused the money, but in an interview reported in northern newspapers Mr Arnold said that he now had the money in his possession and intended to use it. He did not deny that the money had previously been returned to the art union authorities, but was unwilling to make any explanation about the matter.
