WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

SOUTH CANTERBURY FEDERATION The executive of the South Canterbury Federation of Women’s Institutes met at Geraldine when the following members were present: Mesdames L. E. Williams (in the chair), G. A. Macdonald. A. G. Brown, J. McLeod, P. Grant, C. S. Chisnall, A. B. Mackenzie, M. B. Reid, Misses Ferguson, Davies, and A. T. Williams (secretary). Apologies were received from Mesdames W. E. Mills and Guild, and Misses G. A. Brown and A. Begg. A motion of sympathy was passed with Mrs P. W. Hislop in the death )f her husband, members standing in silence. It was decided to forward a letter of appreciation to the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union for inviting delegates from institutes to attend the Country Educational week. Congratulations were passed to all who had helped to further the treeplanting scheme. Correspondence was read from Mrs Ramsay, of the Southland Federation, asking that a collection of arts and crafts exhibits be loaned for an exhibition in Invercargill on December 6. It was agreed to help Mrs A. G. Brown to collect exhibits from Geraldine, and Mrs A. B. Mackenzie to pack and consign the collection to Invercargill by November 28. A “Coming Events Column” is being instituted by the editor of “Home and Country,” which will include the date and place of all the more important gatherings in each Federation such as annual and half-yearly council meetings, group meetings, festival and exhibition. It was decided to send a letter of appreciation to Mr G. Dash, Mayor of Waimate, for his assistance at the recent Council, and to the “Waimate Advertiser” for its gift of souvenir programmes. It was announced that Mr Robert Young of Auckland had given two challenge cups at the conference, and it was agreed to present the larger rose bowl to the Federation achieving, during the year, the most outstanding piece of work of greatest value to women’s institutes. The smaller bowl will be presented to the Federation sending the best collection of pioneer tales. It was decided to appoint Miss G. A. Brown as delegate to the S.P.C.A., subject to her consent. An invitation was received from the Technical College to attend its display of handwork. Mrs J. McLeod was appointed to represent the executive. Arrangements were made for the annual council meeting, when an address will be given by Mrs W. Deans, president of North Canterbury 7 Federation.
