LAWN TENNIS
MEETING OF TIMARU CLUB OFFICERS ELECTED The annual meeting of the Timaru Tennis Club was held last night, Dr. W. R. Fea presiding. Reviewing the year’s activities, the president said that the club had been successful in winning the A grade com* petition and had been runner-up in the B grade. It was particularly gratifying that the B grade was strong, for it was the nursery for the A grade. The standard of the club was judged by its average players and not by the standard of a few “top-notchers.” It was to be hoped that good coaching would be given the junior players during the season, for the club had some junior players who would make history in New Zealand tennis in the future. The annual report (previously published) and balance-sheet were adopted. The following officers were elected: President, Dr. W. R. Fea; vice-president Mr A. E. Sandral; secretary, Mr R. Shiels; treasurer, Mr J. Turnbull; committee, Misses J. McCann, V. Campbell, if. Gillingham, Messrs R. A. Holdgate, S. Martin and M. Watson; auditor, Mr C. G. Bryah King; delegates to South Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association, Messrs R. A. Holdgate and A. E. Sandral; match committee, Miss V. Campbell, Messrs W. G. Robertson, M. Watson and S. Martin. Umpires Wanted. A suggestion that the Association should be asked to provide umpires whenever possible in Association matches was made by Mr M. Watson, and the club’s delegates were asked to bring the matter Up at the annual meeting of the Association. Another suggestion made was that the Association should recognise the winners of the three grades by giving members of the teams small badges, bearing the date, to attach to their blazers. It was decided to organise a competition for B and C grade players of clubs affiliated to the Association to be played on the Timaru Club courts before the opening of the Association competitions. The president remarked that at the previous annual meeting a resolution had been carried permitting Sunday play on re courts and, as' there did not appear to be any objection, the same rule would apply during the coming season. It was decided to enter an A grade and a B grade and, if possible, a C grrde team in the Association’s competitions. Opening day was fixed for October 5. HIGHFIELD CLUB At the annual meeting of the Highfield Tennis Club Mr R. Cole presided over a good attendance of members. The annual report and balance-sheet were adopted.
