OBITUARY

MR J. HUMPHRIS A pioneer settler, Mr John Humphris. died at his home at Tawai on September 8. Mr Humphris, who was in his eightieth year, had come from Gloucester to New Zealand in 1876, and was married in 1882 at Columba Churcn, Oamaru by the Rev. Todd to Miss Jessie Rodgers. They came to Tawai in 1887 and took up land. Mr Humphris was ever ready to do a good turn and was highly respected by all who knew him. There was a large gathering at the burial in the Waimate cemetery. Three of his family predeceased him, but his widow, two sons—Messrs T. Humphris (Washdyke) and W. Humphris (Tawai), and three daughters— Mrs A. Pelvin (Totara Valley), Mrs W. Harper (St. Andrews) and Mrs L. Forerst (Makikihi) and numerous grandchildren are left to mourn their loss. The well-known philologist and classical scholar, Dr Peter Giles, master at Emmanual College, Cambridge, since 1911 and doyen of the heads of Cambridge Colleges, died to-day aged 74. ~

Riverhead Gold and Desert Gold, are splendid teeth preservers, ana more fragrant and delightful tobaccos are simply not to be had whatever price you may pay
