BOWLING

TIMARU PARK CLUB ANNUAL MEETING The annual meeting of the Timaru Park Bowling Club was held last night, Mr J. M. Toneycliffe presiding over a good attendance. . Mr J - A - Millar said that considering the small number of members the club had had a very successful year, and great credit was due to the president and officers for the manner in which they had managed the finances. It was very gratifying to finish the year practically square. Mr R. Kirk also congratulated the president and committee on their good work. Mr J. Gilmore spoke in warm terms of praise of the activities of the social committee, under the direction of the president, who had given the club valuable financial support. On the motion of Messrs A. Thoreau and w. Stevens, the annual report and balance-sheet (previously published) were adopted. The election of officers resulted: Patrons, the Mayor (Mr T. w. Satterthwaite), Messrs P. j. Rolleston and Wm. C. Raymond; president, Mr J. M. Toneycliffe; vice-presidents. Messrs N Walker (senior), J. a. Millar and C Howe; executive, Messrs J. Murphy, A. Earl, A. Cullen, W. Stevens and R. Millar; hon. secretary and treasurer] Mr J. O’Leary; hon. auditor, Mr A. Thoreau; match and selection committee, Messrs C. Howe, J. Gilmore and J. O’Leary; green supervisor, Mr J. Gilmore; delegate to South Canterbury Bowling Centre, Mr F. B. Hawkey. Recommendations to Centre Mr Gilmdre suggested that it should be a recommendation to the Centre to revert to the original system of playing the Bristol Cup over eight rinks. He moved in this direction. “The best game of bowls is over eight rinks,’’ said Mr L. Dewar, in seconding the motion. Mr J. O’Leary supported the motion, and held that the Bristol Cup provided a good friendly game of bowls and should be played over eight rinks. Mr A. Thoreau considered that it might be possible to add a proviso that any country club unable to raise eight rinks could be met with six rinks. It would give every club in the Centre a chance to play for the trophy. Mr F. B. Hawkey considered that in the meantime the club should affirm the principle of eight rinks. The motion was carried unanimously. “The Christmas tournament last year was more or less of a farce,” said Mr L, Dewar, who contended that the Centre should be asked to revert to the old system of rinks, singles and pairs. A recommendation to this effect was unanimously adopted. It was unanimously agreed, on the motion of Mr W. Cowles, that it be a recommendation that the Centre competition this year be on a four-rink basis. On the suggestion of Mr W. Cowles, it was decided to extend an invitation to members of the Timaru Club, whose green would not be available until December, to use the Park green in the afternoons until the Timaru Club opened. It was decided that the club's championship include a junior section this season. Thanks were extended to Mr Toneycliffe for his good work on behalf of the club, several speakers paying a tribute to him. KIA TOA LADIES’ CLUB The annual meeting of the ladies’ section of the Kia Toa Bowling Club was held on Tuesday. Mrs J. T. Hunt presided over a good attendance of members.
