WAIMATE
CHANGE IN THE HALFHOLIDAY OPERATIVE SATURDAY The Saturday half-holiday in Waimate will become operative on Saturday. The majority of the shops will remain open to-day, but will close at noon on Saturday. Late shopping night will be observed to-morrow when shOi-s will close at the hours previously adhered to on Saturdays. A number of tradesmen have an option as to which day they will observe as early closing day. At least one of the tobacconists will remain open on Saturday afternoon, but will close on Thursdays at noon. Both butchers will probably observe the Saturday half-holiday. Three of the four bakers will deliver bread as previously, observing Thursday as the half-day. The decisions of these tradesmen are at present only tentative and may be altered when the new half-day becomes operative. BRAKE TESTING Commencing to-day, traffic inspectors will carry out a campaign of brake testing in Waimate. All motorists will be required to undergo the tests unless they can produce a certificate from a garage. BASKETBALL The Waimate Basketball representatives will play matches against Timaru first and second grade teams at Timaru on Saturday. Other matches which are tentatively arranged are against Ashburton at Ashburton on August 10 and against North Otago at Waimate on August 17. PERSONAL Bishop West-Watson of Christchurch will spend to-day with the Rev. A. H. Acheson and Mrs Acheson at St. Augustin’s Vicarage. He will conduct confirmation services at Morven in the afternoon and at St. Augustine's Church in the evening. ODDFELLOWS The fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Waimate Lodge No. 80 was held on Monday. Bro. W. S. White, N.G., presided over a good attendance of brothers. Five brothers were reported to be on the sick list, and sick pay totalling £l4 and a maternity bonus were passed for payment. One candidate was proposed for membership. It was decided to hold a degree meeting next lodge night. The delegates to the Friendly Societies Council reported on the last meeting held, several matters of interest being dealt with. After lodge closed supper was served and members enjoyed games and cards. FUNERAL All sections of the community were represented at the funeral of Mr L. E. Reeve at the Waimate cemetery yesterday afternoon. The Manchester Unity Lodge and Waimate Silver Band, with both of which bodies Mr Reeve had been connected, paraded. Members of the Waimate Bowling Club, Rugby Sub-Union and local bodies were also present together with a large concourse of friends.

South Canterbury representative match will be played at Waimate on August 10.
