SOUTH CANTERBURY TOURNAMENT

SUCCESSFUL DAY The annual seven a-side Rugby and six a-side basketball toornaments conducted by the South Canterbury Primary Schools’ Sports Association were held on Fraser Park on Saturday. The weather was fine but somewhat cold, the children finding it difficult to keep their hands warm. The girls were chiefly affected, and in their matches found it hard to hold the ball. The tournaments were well controlled by the teachers, who put through big programmes in good time. The A grade section of the football was won by the West School, who secured a well-merited win over a heavier side in the final. The B grade was annexed by the Marist Bros team, which scored 30 points in three games, no points being registered against them. Pleasant Point won the C grade, while West caried off the D grade, beating Temuka in the final by a half-point, the country team conceding a force down in the fourth spell. Marist won the E grade, playing four games. They scored 33 points, while three were registered against them. Waimataitai secured their only win in Grade F, while Albury-Mt. Nessing won Che country section. In the basketball. West A won the senior division, scoring 20 goals in three matches, four being registered against them. Pleasant Point fielded a fine B grade team, which scored 33 goals in three games, only one being scored against them. West A won the C grade, securing a narrow win over Temuka after a hard-fought final. West A also annexed the C grade, while Pleasant Point won the D section. Arowhenua were successful in the country division. South succeeded in getting into the final in the A. B, and D grades, but were beaten in all three.
