Tire competition offered on the open fruit market by prison produce was the subject of a letter from the Hutt Valley Producers’ Association, received at Saturday evening’s meeting of the Christchurch Tomato and stone Fruit Gowers’ Association. The letter asked for the Christchurch Association’s support of the campaign being carried on in Wellington against the Prisons Department’s “iniquitous policy.” The chairman, Mr C. E. Pope, said that there were also grounds for complaint in Christchurch, for tomatoes from the prison were at times being placed on the market in quantities of 60 to 80 cases a day, the cases being secondhand ones. The meeting instructed the secretary to write a letter of protest to the Miniister for Justice and to enlist the aid of members of Parliament.
