Parnell (Dunedin), J Madigan (Oamaru), J. Penman (Auck land) and R. Watson (Wellington) are guests at the Empire. Mr J. W. Miles, Deputy-Commis sioner of Patents, has left on a holiday visit to England. He will attend the International Copyright Convention. The death is announced of Mr Wil liam Alfred Percy, a member of one ol the pioneer families of Petone and an expert horticulturist. Mr T. Hassell, of the staff of th< Hamilton branch of the Bank of Aus tralasia. has received notice of transfer to Feilding. Brigadier and Mrs Baer, who for five years have been the Otago and Southland divisional commanders of the Salvation Army, have been transferred to Auckland. Mr H. R. Pascoe. of the staff of the Petone Post Office, has been appointed postmaster at Paraparaumu. and will leave Petone about the end of the month. Mr H. S. Barns —‘ •'--manager ol the Christchurch branch of Dalgety and Company, has received advice ol his pnrom»-,ent to the ol the firm’s business in East Africa. H« will be stationed at Nairobi, Kenya. The China Inland Mission has accepted Dr. Hallum Howie, formerly oi Maori Hill, Dunedin, but lately ol Auckland, and Mr Mellsop (lately preaching at a Baptist church in Nelson) for service in China as foreign missionaries. A cable message from London announces that the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates • (New Zealand Minister of Finance) boarded the Bremen on Saturday for America. Mr Coates declared he is satisfied everything is proceeding satisfactorily. Mr A. H. Baile. of Sydney, has been appointed judge at the New Zealand Brass Bands’ contest, to be held at New Plymouth next February Mi Tom Gray, who leaves Wanganui at the end of the month to reside in Wellington, has been appointed assistant judge. Major R. W. Fenton, Wellington, who holds the ommand of the 19th Battery has been promoted to the rank of lieutenant-colonel and given the command of all field batteries in the Central Command. He is the first territorial officer commissioned stace the war who has gained this rank. Dr. Eugene Lynch, radium officer to the Wellington Hospital, who for the last 12 months has been doing postgraduate work in radiology in London and on the Continent, is returning by the Port Fairy on August 15. Dr Lynch recently gained the diploma in radiology of the University of London. Mr A. St. C. Belcher, chairman of the management committee of the Auckland Rugby Union, who is chief clerk in the State Fire and Accident Insurance at Auckland, has been transferred to Hamilton as manager of the branch office there. His position in the Auckland office Will be filled by Mr C. G. Slater, of Dunedin. Recent arrivals at the Grosvenor include: Messrs J. B. Clark, H. G. Williams (Wellington), E. Dodd has been elected to the Norrishulse Chair of Divinity at Cambridge University. The Rev. Dodd is a well-known authority on Biblical exegesis and was formerly a Congregational minister. The appointment marks an historic departure, as he will be the first non-conformist appointed to a professorship of divinity at Cambridge since the days of the Commonwealth.
