ANGLO-AUSTRALIAN TOURNEY VISITORS WIN DOUBLES United Press Association—By Electric* Telegraph -Copyright LONDON, July 19. The doubles match of the three-day teams test between Britain and Australia was played at Eastbourne today. Results: — A. K. Quist and D. P. Turnbull (Australia) beat G. P. Hughes and C. R. D. Tuckey (Britain), 3-6, 6-3, 8-6, 6-4. Turnbull was the best of the four. He served and smashed with savage accuracy. The Australian pair were generally superior in volleying and smashing. Tuckey, who is England’s new Davis Cup team recruit, is playing much better with experience. He is serving powerfully and his ground strokes have improved. SECOND DAY’S PLAY CRAWFORD AND PERRY IN THE LEAD Onlted Press Association— By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received July 21, 6.30 p.m.) LONDON, July 20. The tennis match, England v. Australia, was continued at Eastbourne today. The second series of singles resulted:— J. H. Crawford (Australia) defeated H. W. Austin (England), 6-2, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. F. J. Perry (England) v. V. B. McGrath (Australia), 2-6, 6-2, 3-1 (abandoned on account of rain). Full of confidence after defeating Ferry, Crawford drove deeply and powerfully. He served well and volleyed more often than usual. Altogether he overshadowed the Englishman’s stylish but less virile game. Perry and McGrath fought at a great pace. McGrath in the first set hammered backhand drives straight down the line with remarkable accuracy, but Perry, intensifying his boisterous belligerence, overwhelmingly won the second set. Profits from Tour Harry Hopman, writing in “The Sun” on tennis subjects, says that the Australians’ tour has been a financial success. The profits, without taking the test now in progress at Eastbourne, where most of the seats have been sold, should approach £2OOO, The Davis Cup matches between Australia and New Zealand yielded £IOO, between Australia and France £2500 .and between Australia and Germany £9OO.
