HARRIER NOTES

(By “Marathon")

FIXTURES July 27th— Waimate-Timaru Road Relay Race. August 10—Proposed handicap race over Orr-Walker Cup course. August 31— Temuka-Timaru Road Race. Saturday Club-runs The Anglican Club will hold their weekly run from the residence of Mr R. Browne, Avenue Road. The West End Club will hold their weekly run from the residence of Mr E. Cooper, Newton Street. Harriers and Wheelbarrows The Presbyterian and Timaru Harrier Clubs have arranged a novelty outing for to-day. The Clubs will hold an inter-club wheelbarrow sports meeting on Caroline Bay. An energetic committee has arranged a wellvaried programme. A series of sprint races for juniors and seniors and an inter-club relay for both seniors and juniors will be run. It was suggested that the two heavyweight presidents of the respective clubs, Messrs J. A. Norrie and C. W. Cameron should compete in an event with the club captains in the shafts, but it is understood that both these gentlemen are not available. It is anticipated that the whole afternoon’s sport will create a good deal of enjoyment not only for the harriers concerned but also for any interested spectators. . Waimate-Timaru Relay Road Race This event is set down for next Saturday, and is creating a good deal of interest amongst the local harrier clubs. This even was run for the first time last year, and the experience gained by the officials conducting the race

will be helpful for this year's event. It is likely that there will be a slight alteration in the course owing to the danger of finishing the race at the

Hydro Corner. The race finishes about 5 o'clock and as the Hunt Club races are being held on the same date the motor traffic coming from Washdyke would be arriving in town about the same time as the race would finish, and this would be a source of danger to runners, spectators and officials. The runners will come along Craigie Avenue, to Theodocia Street and then along Arthur Street finishing at the Post Office Temuka-Timaru Read Race A suggestion has been put forward that this event should be run a week or two weeks earlier than the date selected, August 31. The Port Chalmers road race is to be run on Saturday September 7 and Otago road runners would not take part in the Temuka-Timaru race if it is held on August 31, The Otago Centre and the Dunedin Harrier Clubs are to be communicated with in reference to the suggested alteration in the dates and it is to be hoped a date to suit the Otago runners will be decided on as a number are likely to take part in the race. N.Z, Harrier Teams visit to Australia In view of the visit of our cross country runners to Australia the following note is interesting. Australian Apathy The apathy of amateur athletic officials towards the selection and preparation of competitors for the Australian 10,000 metres cross-country championship in August is exercising the minds of the keen-sighted critics. Tp them it is not a personal matter, but one of State interest, for they wish New South Wales to retain its honour of “Teams Champions of Australia.” Only a few weeks remain before the cream of the Commonwealth athletes forgather in Sydney to contest both individual and teams titles. But what has New South Wales done? Nothing beyond selecting Messrs A. J. Hodson, B. C. Button, and Tas. Ferguson as selectors. On the other hand, Victoria has had a team of nearly 20 “possibles” training regularly under the guidance of competent coaches. The seriousness with which they pursue their sport is deserving of success, and, what is more, they will achieve it.
