Taranaki Leads the Way The statement that Taranaki led the way in pastures and root-growing and that the field competitions in Taranaki were followed closely in his district as well as In other parts of the North Island was made by a prominent Pahiatua farmer who recently visited North Taranaki. He considered it was a great pity that Mr J. M. Smith, who had "grown up with the competitions,” which he had placed on such a sound basis, could not have been allowed to remain in Taranaki and follow up that work, which was serving as a pattern to other districts. He expressed gratification at learning that the work was still being carried on on the same ground and progressive lines by Mr Smiths successor. During his stay in Taranaki he visited several farms, including that of Mr J. M. Blyde. Lepperton. At this farm he was greatly struck with the pastures and the rotational system of grazing.
