SOUTH CANTERBURY HUNT
MEETING OF COMMITTEE Arrangements for the forthcoming race meeting were made at a meeting of the committee of the South Canterbury Hunt yesterday. Present, the Master, Mr C. L. Orbell (chairman). Miss Edgar Jones, Messrs R. J. Murphy, A, G. Macdonald, M. Harper, R, J. Bassett, W. D. Orbell, A. S. Elworthy and M. F. Maze. Mr Elworthy reported on the annual conference of the New Zealand Hunts’ Association and was accorded a vote of thanks. A letter was received from Mr K Austin, Oamaru, offering suggestions in regard to next year’s point-to-point steeplechase meeting. Mr Austin was thanked for his letter, which was held over for further consideration.
The following officials were appointed for the forthcoming race meeting: Judicial committee, Messrs C. L. Orbell, A. G. Macdonald, H. H. Fisher, Herbert Elworthy and W. H. Orbell; pay out stewards, Messrs C. L. Orbell and A. S. Elworthy; jockeys’ room and scales steward, Mr W. J. Bassett; birdcage steward, Mr R. J. Murphy; dismount steward, Mr W. J. Bassett. Mr P. A. Elworthy was thanked for his gift of a cup for the race for amateur riders.
It was agreed as a result of a conference of racing and trotting clubs held in Timaru recently, that the Hunt Club was willing to co-operate in a suggestion that no horse be allowed to start at meetings until acceptance fees were paid.
