MEETING OF EXECUTIVE A meeting of the executive of the South Canterbury Returned Soldiers’ Association was held last Wednesday evening, the Rev. J. Milbum Stewart presiding. Reports were received showing the membership of the St. Andrews, Pleasant Point apd Mackenzie subbranches to be 60, 65 and 70 respectively. There was a total of 22 unemployed. The chairman reported that there were 138 registered unemployed in Timaru, and that the Unemployment Committee of the Association was submitting to Headquarters a protest against the differentiation made by the Unemployment Board in the rates of pay granted to town and country unemployed. The Pensions Committee reported that the usual hospital Visiting programme had been carried out, and that arrangements for the Association’s social had been completed. A letter was received from the Gisborne Returned Soldiers’ Association issuing a challenge to a membership drive. It was decided to accept it, and to concentrate upon a drive for new members. Mr W. M. Hocking was appointed the Association’s delegate to the meeting called by the Timaru Unemployed Workers’ Union. PARADE CANCELLED By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, July 19. Some weeks ago a suggestion was made that there should be a parade of returned soldiers at the War Memorial Carillon, but considerable objection was raised, many letters appearing in ti e press against any demonstration Of a military character. It Was announced to-day by the R.S.A. that no parade would be held.
