YESTERDAY’S RUGBY GAMES HOCKEY CLUB FORMED The Waimate Rugby Football SubUnion’s competitions were continued yesterday, when in spite of the bitterly cold westerly wind which prevailed, a good attendance of spectators witnessed the games. The play was as follows: Southern v. Glenavy. Balfour kicked off against the sur. and Southern forwards headed by Dennlston smothered the return, the ball going out near Glenavy’s 25. From the throw in Southern improved their position, a strong attack being pulled up by J. Fleming, who marked and lined at half-way. From a scrum Wright sent Allen away, but his kick was fielded smartly by Matheson, who lined 10 yards from half way, and Crowe took play from the line out to the Southern 25. Samways went eff at this stage with a knee injury. From a scrum penalty right on the half way line T. Fleming had a shot which went wide. Wright secured from a scrum and whipped round smartly to run and put in a good line kick to past Glenavy’s 25. Sole was conspicuous in twice gaining ground for Southern, but a good passing rush by Collins, Brosnahan, Matheson and Fleming took play right to the Southern line where a penalty brought relief. A moment later Matheson attempted a pot at goal which went wide. Wright, Samways and Sole were prominent from the drop out in taking play to Glenavy ’s 25, where from a penalty wide out Balfour missed with a kick at goal, Fleming’s drop out was over 50 yards in distance and McNeill lined smartly neav his 25. Here play settled for some time till from a scrum penalty J. Fleming landed a fine goal. Glenavy 3, Southern 0. From the kick off W. Fleming headed a good forward rush, but Woods, Gray and Balfour brought play back past half way and Sherwri lined at the 25 with a good kick. W. Fleming and Crowe set up a strong counter attack to past half way, where Samways came across to save. Saraways In good solo Work gained 20 yards but a fine forward rush saw Glenavy go right to the Blue line before being pulled up for an infringement. A moment later T. Fleming missed with a penalty kick which was fielded by O. Veitch who ran up smartly and lined 10 yards from half way. Play continued in Southern territory, till a scrum penalty saw McNeill line at half way and the interval was called. Glenavy 3, Southern 0. On resuming Brosnahan put Glenavy on attack with a well judged kick past Southern 25, and from a forward movement Crowe kicked slightly too hard and Wright forced. From tho drop out Whatman, Bryce and Denniston led a forward rush well into Red territory, but two penalties in quick succession brought relief. Samways kept up the pressure and play remained in Gienavy’s 25 till Walker ran up smartly and lined at half way. Southern forwards took play back and things again looked dangerous for Glenavy till Wright kicked over for Walker to force. From the drop out forward play saw Southern again go right to the Red line, but a force again resulted. From the drop out Sherwin kicked back to the Red 25. but Glenavy came back with a fine rush to past half way. Here the ball was kicked back to McNeill, who put in a great return and by fast following up compelled Walker to kick out at the corner. Glenavy forwards headed by Crowe, took play to past half way and T. Fleming had an unsuccessful shot from a penalty, a force down resulting. Crowe twice again put in fine forward work, and kept Southern busy on defence. Eventually from a loose rush the ball was kicked over and Brosnahan dived across to touch down. T. Fleming converted with a fine kick. Glenavy 8. Southern 0. Play remained for a time at half way, till a penalty put Glenavy again on attack and they went to neav the Blue line in loose rushes. Following a scrum the ball was again kicked over and Matheson following fast beat O. Veitch to the touch. T. Fleming's kick was again successful. Glenavy 13. Southern 0. Time was called shortly afterwards with the scores unaltered. Mr S. Fleming was referee.

Old Boys v. Huimai. In this match Old Boys fielded only 12 players and in consequence Huimai registered an easy victory by 25 points to 6, comprised of tries by M. Cochrane. T. Wesley, S. W. Wyndham, H. Davis and N. Cumming, one try being converted by Cumming and one by Wesley who also kicked a penalty goal. D. Paterson kicked two penalty goals for Old Boys. Mr J. V. Riach was referee. Juniors. Southern and Huimai met on No 1 ground, and an even game resulted. Southern registering the winning scorn right on the call of time, making the game 6-3 in their favour, G. Hynes (penalty goal) and F. Morrison (try) scored for Southern, and C. Meynell kicked a penalty goal for Huimai. Mr E. Morrison was referee. High School and Old Boys played a fast open game on No. 3 ground, no score being registered until well into the second spell, when A. Cochrane went across for a try for School, giving them the victory by 3 points to nil. Mr N. Anderson refereed.

HOCKEY A decision to form a hockey club in Waimate was made by a largely attended public meeting held on Wednesday night in the Borough Council Chambers for the purpose of discussing the possibility of reviving hockey in Waimate. Mr S. C. Batchelor was voted to the chair. A motion that a hockey club to be known as the Waimate Hockey Club, membership being open to both men and women, be formed, was moved by Mr W. F. George, and seconded by Mr D. Jones. The following officials were elected: President, Mr J. Samways; vice-presi-dents, Mrs R. H. Kaan and Mr I. Schrader; secretary and treasurer. Mi S. C. Batchelor; committee, Mrs F. Taylor, Misses E. Sherwin and M. Hughes and Messrs W. F. George, J. Barry, S. Bennington and H. Eddington. Subscriptions were fixed as follows: Women 2/-, men 3/-. It was decided that the club colours be blue and white. It was agreed that a deputation comprising the president, secretary and Mr George wait on the Borough Council with a view to obtaining the use of a suitable playing area. Mr Bennington reported that Mr R H. Kaan had offered the use of a paddock as a practice ground in the meantime. Mr Kaan’s offer was accepted with thanks. It was resolved that the South Canterbury and North Otago Associations be invited to play a representative game to Waimate to give a stimulus to the game locally.
