NORTH OTAGO

TOWN AND COUNTRY ITEMS OAMARU, June 27. Personal: Last evening at the residence of Mi W. Widdowson the members of the North School Committee met to bid farewell to Mr J. Newson, who is leaving shortly to reside in Dunedin. In making the presentation of a case of military hair brushes, Mr Widdowson referred to the valuable work done by Mr Newson during 14 years on the committee, including his sendees as chairman and secretary for part, of that time. Mr Newson suitably acknowledged the gift.

Overseas Shipping: The National Mortgage and Agency Company, Oamaru. has received advice that the s.s. Fakeha will call at Oamaru about July 8 to life 10,000 freight carcases of frozen meat for west coast United Kingdom ports, and general cargo for these ports and London.

The Port Hobart is scheduled to arrive at Oamaru on July 20 to load 15,000 freight carcases and general cargo for London. Messrs Darling and McDowell are the agents.

Rugby Competitions: The town competition is now at a stage where all depends on the result of the main game on Saturday—that between Maheno and Old Boys. With the approach of the final round, Maheno has only to win one more game to annex the competition. However, if Old Boys beat Maheno on Saturday, anything might happen. Last Saturday Old Boys and Athletic played for second position in the competition, and. after one of the most closely contested games of the season. Old Boys came off winners, with only one point ahead of the Maroons.

Duntroon stil! maintains its lead in the country competition, although it played a drawn game with Ngapara last Saturday, each side scoring 9 points. The teams in the country are fairly evenly matched. Southern still occupies premier place in the junior competition, being five points ahead of Old Boys. In the Third Grade Old Boys and St. Kevin’s are level, with 10 points each, and in the Fourth and Fifth Grade, Athletic has a very decided lead on the other teams. Representative Basketball:

At a meeting of the Management Committee of the Basketball Association, it was decided to accede to South Canterbury's suggestion that the game against its team be played at Oamaru on July 13.

Community Singing: The community sing held at the Opera House last evening was generally conceded to be one of the best, if not the best, conducted so far this winter, both from the aspects of attendance and financially. The vocal response elicited from the audience by the indefatigable song leaders, Messrs Linton Hodge and James Weir, was excellent. The amount realised by the collection at last night’s sing £6/13/-. was the largest to date this winter.
