TEMUKA

HIGHLAND PIPE BAND A SOUND POSITION A credit of £l2O with several amounts still to be collected was shown in the balance-sheet of the Temuka Highland Pipe Band at its twenty-third annual meeting on Wednesday evening. Mr G. Wallace presided, and there were 20 members present The annual report, stated that the personnel was 10 pipers, five drummers and a drum-major. The band had Played at many functions in the district and taken part in the contest at Geraldine. At the latter a good performance was given although there had been little time for practising. There were several young men waiting to join the band, and they would then bring the numbers un to the full complement. The matter of attending practices more regularly was one that needed the attention of members, especially in view of the enrolment of new members.

The balance-sheet showed that after commencing with a credit of £ll7 19s 4d receipts for the season totalled £145 12s 6d, and exnenses £25 10s. Assets amounted to £391 12s 6d and liabilities nil. Members commented favourably on the financial position and the result of the year’s working, and on the motion of Messrs D. Milne and L. Waters the report and balance-sheet were adopted. The election of officers resulted:— Patron, Mr G, Fletcher, sen.; president, Mr A. W. Buzan, vice-presidents, Messrs W. Cargo and M. M. Coffey; pipe-major, Mr G. Wallace; pipe sergeant, Mr G. Fletcher, jun.; pine corporal, Mr W. Scott; drum-major, Mr H. Harrison, drum-sergt.; Mr G. Horwell; drum-corporal, Mr L. lies; secretary and treasurer. Mr H. Harrison; trustees, Messrs W. F. Evans and H. Harrison; custodians, Messrs G. Fletcher, jun. and Harrison. The chairman said that the question of entering for the Canterbury Provincial Bands' Association’s contest at Amberley on October 12 had to be decided. There was considerable discussion and it was finally agreed to enter. New members elected were:—Messrs J. Harrison, A. Songster, B. Baxter, V. Connolly and C. Patterson. It was decided to hold the weekly practices on Wednesdays and to select tile tunes at the first practice. The question of visiting Geraldine was held over until after the contest. An invitation from the Geraldine Presbyterian Church for several pipers to attend a social in July was accepted. It was decided to buy a new drum. An honorarium of £2 2s was voted to the secretary and votes of thanks were passed to the newspapers and the chairman.

GOLF CLUB With the advent of the Saturday half-holiday necessitating an alteration in the season’s programme the committee of the Temuka Golf Club met on Wednesday evening to make arrangements accordingly. Mr C. L. Fraser presided. After a general discussion it was decided, on the recommendation of the ladies present, that Wednesday be the women's match day in future and that men’s competitions be played on Saturdays, competitors who had not already contributed to pay 2/6 each towards the afternoon tea for the remainder of the season. With regard to women members whose work precluded them from playing on Wednesdays, it was decided that they be allowed to use the links on Saturdays. The resignation of Mr R. H. Taylor from the committee was accepted with regret.

It was decided to present suitably inscrioed miniature cups, in addition to the usual cups, to the winners of the club championships in all grades. The method to be adopted for granting reductions in handicaps was discussed, and it was agreed that only the cards used in club competitions be recognised. The match committee submitted a revised programme for the remainder of the season, which was approved.

SOCIAL EVENINGS Considerable interest was taken n the fortnightly social of the St. Joseph’s Parish which took the form of a plain and fancy dress ball for which the hostesses were Mesdames M. M. Coffey, H. P. Dunne and W. Quirke. Substantial prizes were given for the best fancy dresses and the winners were Misses C. Fitzgerald and Edna McGarva (Mickey and Minme Mouse) 1, Misses M. Lalor and L. Shiels (Nigger and Topsy) 2, Miss M. Hanifin and Mr J. Boyle (Victorian lady and bride) 3. In a maxina competition the winners were Miss L. Ives and Mr T, Smith and Miss K. Spillane and Mr W. Horgan. Monte Carlo dances were won by Miss M. McFarlane and Mr L. McFarlane and Miss T. Taehari and Mr G. Horgan. During the evening Mr T. Langrell gave a tap dance. A competition was won by Messrs L. J. Wood and A. Hally. The M.C. was Mr W. Seeler and music was provided by a Timaru orchestra.

The Temuka District High School Committee held the first of a series of euchre parties and dances in the Druids Hall on Wednesday. There was a good attendance. Card games were won by Mesdames J. Fisher and R. H. Taylor and Messrs B. King and G, Parke. After supper a dance was heid for which Mr S. Cross supplied the music and Mr S. Erwood was the M.C. BASKETBALL At the fortnightly meeting of the Management Committee of the Temuka and District Basketball Subassociation on Wednesday evening there were present: Mr H. F. Christie (in the chair), Mesdames L. Templeton, J. C. Hayhurst and L. S, Palmer, Misses J. Strathdee, M. Gale, I. Ives, E. Reid, E. Flett and Messrs E. Dobson, R. Armstrong, T. H. Paiki and F. E. G. Malcolmson. The Otaio Sub-association wrote inviting Temuka to play a representative match at Pareora on July 6. It was decided to accept and send a second grade team, Mr Christie to be manager and Mrs Templeton chaperon. A letter from the South Canterbury Association regarding the St. Joseph’s Club’s second grade team failing to notify the ground steward of its intention not to complete its games on June 3 and playing a player registered for another club was referred to the club with instructions to forward the reply to the South Canterbury Association. The South Canterbury Association wrote stating that nothing mandatory had been intended in the letter forwarded to clubs in connection with the art union books. The coach of the Pleasant Point Club (Miss A. M. Mcßean) wrote asking if the game Pleasant Point v. High School Old Girls could be played

at 3.30, and it was decided to reply that as there was a game to be played after that the request could not be granted. . The delegates to the South Canterbury Association reported that the Dominion president (Mrs H. D. Muir) would be visiting South Canterbury on July 16, and that sub-associations were being invited to attend a social evening at the Timaru Y.W.C.A. It was decided to hold over a reply until it was found how many would be likely to attend. In connection with the changfe hi the town’s half-holiday it was decided that passes for the teams having to play in the Domain be obtained from the Football Club and issued by the secretary. The possibility of a match against Mackenzie Sub-association at Fairlie was discussed and held over in the meantime. Yesterday’s competition games resulted:— First grade: H.S.O.G. 11 beat Pleasant Point 10, Temuka Young Women 10 beat Clandeboye 3. Second grade: Winchester 26 beat H.S.O.G. 6, High School 14 beat Milford 12. Temuka Young Women 9 beat Geraldine 5. Third grade: Temuka Young Women 11 beat Geraldine B 10. Clandeboye 12 beat Geraldine B 11. Pleasant Point 1 4 beat Orton 9, Kerry town 12 beat Arowhenua 9.

CLANDEBOYE Mr H. Mackle, Kaikoura, who has been staying with his brother, Mr P. Mackle, Clandeboye, has returned north. Although the weather was wet there was a good attendance at the Clandeboye Hall Committee’s weekly table tennis evening. A tournament was played to decide places on ladders for men and women, and after supper a dance was held for which a local orchestra contributed music and Miss M. Clayton extras. Mr A. McLaren was M.C.
